Engineer Staff Platform Engineer - Infrastructure at Kalepa

Staff Platform Engineer designs and maintains infrastructure systems supporting AI-powered insurance software at scale.

Senior Posted about 9 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

About Kalepa:

Insurance is a $7T global industry built on professional labor: underwriting, claims, pricing, operations, and distribution. Kalepa is building AI that can perform that work.

We create professional-grade AI systems for insurers: software that can read, reason, decide, and act inside real workflows and operate over long-time horizons. Kalepa begins by augmenting professionals with the tools to succeed at their jobs. That earns us the right to learn from real decisions, capture decision traces, and automate what can be automated successfully over time.

Our products are already in production with leading insurers, driving measurable outcomes and expanding across functions. The opportunity is far broader than any single workflow: to build the AI operating system for decision-making across insurance. For people who want to work on AI that matters, in a sector where correctness, trust, and real-world impact count, Kalepa is just getting started.

Kalepa is backed by leading investors such as IA Ventures and Inspired Capital, and our team brings experience from Facebook, Palantir, Google, Amazon, McKinsey, Mastercard, and Uber.

Our Values (This is important):

Many organizations have a dusty list of corporate values that no one ever follows. Kalepa is not one of those companies. Our values are designed to unlock the potential of our employees.

Success at Kalepa is bred from five core principles:

  • Hustle and Determination- We hire people who take full ownership of their craft and relentlessly pursue excellence with speed and determination. We choose the hard problems and do not give up. This is the foundation of how we work and how we win.
  • Deliver Customer Impact- We’re obsessed with customer impact. Every feature, every line of code, every decision is measured against one question: does this help insurers make better decisions? If it doesn’t drive speed, accuracy, or profitability for our customers, we don’t build it.
  • Meritocracy- We’re building something exceptional, and that requires exceptional people and ideas. We have a high bar but we reward excellence with rapid growth. If you’re the best at what you do, you’ll thrive here.
  • Transparency - We value honest, transparent communication over politics. We challenge ideas, not people. We say what needs to be said, even when it’s hard. This is how we solve problems fast and find the truth.
  • Experiment Relentlessly - Many of the problems we face have never been solved before. We tackle them by testing quickly, measuring rigorously, and iterating until we find the path forward. Speed of learning is our advantage.

In addition to our NY office, we have remote employees speaking 10+ languages across the globe. But we invest in bringing our people together both for regional meetups and global offsites (2021 - Playa Del Carmen | 2022 - Rome | 2023 - Buenos Aires | 2024 - Lisbon | 2025 - Cartagena).

Kalepa’s culture isn’t for everyone, and that’s ok. But for the people who are a fit, they can’t imagine working elsewhere.

About the role:

Salary range: $220k – $300k USD*

Location: Remote (USA)

We are looking for smart engineers who love to code, seek challenging problems, and appreciate recognition for excellent work. As part of the infrastructure team, you will work on the infrastructure and tooling that power our core platform. You’ll maintain CI/CD pipelines, automate operational workflows, and ensure we stay secure and compliant to the industry standards. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include improving infrastructure performance and reliability, monitoring and optimizing system cost, and collaborating with engineering teams to standardize environments and deployment patterns. You’ll help to maintain observability and incident response processes, and ensure the scalability of our cloud-based systems as we continue to grow.

You’ll collaborate with a global team of full-stack, data, AI, and DevOps engineers to build scalable backend solutions as we continue to grow. We’re a small team where individual contributions have an outsized impact on both our technology and our business.

You’ll be right at home if you:

  • Have 8+ years of software engineering or DevOps experience, ideally with time spent working on infrastructure, performance, security, or compliance.
  • You’re excellent at your craft and relentless in pursuing it.
  • Take full ownership of your work and drive projects to completion with minimal oversight.
  • Communicate proactively, surfacing blockers, asking the right questions, keeping stakeholders in the loop.
  • Thrive on experimentation: you’re comfortable testing ideas, measuring results, and iterating quickly on problems no one has solved before.
  • Have strong fundamentals in system design, debugging, and problem-solving.
  • Know Python (our main stack), though we’re open to strong candidates from other OO backgrounds.
  • Have experience with serverless technologies (Lambda, EC2), asynchronous workflows, and cloud environments.
  • Have strong knowledge of relational databases and their performance tuning, ideally PostgreSQL.
  • Know terraform, IaaC best practices, Docker or similar tools.
  • Bonus: experience with LLMs/generative AI, distributed systems

What you’ll get:

  • Competitive salary (based on experience level)*.
  • Significant equity options package.
  • Work with an ambitious, smart, global, and fun team to transform a $7T global industry.
  • 20 days of PTO a year.
  • Global team offsites (2024 - Lisbon, 2025 - Cartagena).
  • 100% covered medical, 100% covered vision and dental for individuals and families.
  • Healthy living/gym stipend. Mobile phone bill stipend.
  • Continuing education credits.
  • 401(k) plan with employer contribution (regardless of employee contribution)

* The salary range listed is an estimate and will vary based on a variety of factors. Final compensation will be determined during the offer stage based on relevant experience, performance during the interview process, and geographic location, and may therefore differ from the posted range.

Engineer Senior Backend Engineer (f/m/x) - remote at refurbed

Senior backend engineer designs and implements scalable backend services in Go and Node.js for a mobile marketplace platform, collaborating with cross-functional product squads.

Senior Remote Posted about 9 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Founded in 2017, refurbed is Europe’s fastest-growing marketplace for refurbished products, active in 23 European countries and having surpassed €2Bn in GMV — all while being profitable. With beautiful headquarters in Vienna, we operate as a remote-first company and have been recognised as a Top DACH Employer by Kununu for four consecutive years.

Our mission is to make sustainable consumption the easy choice by enabling customers to buy products up to 40% cheaper while significantly reducing COâ‚‚ emissions.

If you thrive in an environment that values momentum, ownership, and impact, you’ll feel at home here. We’re a fast-paced, high-performance team that works hard and challenges itself everyday. To enable this high-performance every team member enjoys full autonomy over their location (we’re remote-first).

We are seeking an experienced Senior Backend Engineer (f/m/x) to join our App squad. In this role, you will be responsible for the design and implementation of scalable backend services that power refurbed’s mobile app and marketplace. Just as importantly, you understand how a native mobile app consumes those services - so you can guide backend decisions, your own and those of other squads, to fit the app’s needs and constraints. You will work as part of a cross-functional product squad, collaborating closely with other engineers, product managers, designers, and business members to deliver robust, reliable, and high-performance solutions that enhance the experience of both our customers and our sellers.

Our technology stack is built on proven, modern, and open-source technologies. On the backend, we primarily use Go, gRPC, PostgreSQL, Redis, and RabbitMQ, with Node.js / TypeScript powering a number of app-facing services. Our mobile app is built in React Native + Expo, and on the web frontend we leverage Vue.js, Alpine.js, and Tailwind CSS. Our infrastructure runs on Google Cloud Platform, orchestrated with Kubernetes, ensuring reliability and scalability at every layer.

WHO YOU ARE

  • You have 7+ years experience designing and building scalable backend services in a modern production environment
  • You have strong proficiency in Go and deep understanding of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture
  • You are comfortable with JavaScript/TypeScript, or confident you can pick up Node.js quickly - with strong Go fundamentals, we expect the rest to come easily. Existing Node.js experience is a plus.
  • You’ve worked on a team that builds and maintains a native mobile app. You don’t need to write native code yourself, but you have real exposure to how mobile apps consume backend services and understand the constraints and caveats they introduce (API design for mobile, versioning and backwards compatibility, release cycles, latency, offline behaviour). You can spot when a backend decision won’t fit the app and flag it early.
  • You are well-versed in SQL and relational database design
  • You have general knowledge of the frontend world, and are able to perform basic tasks in our frontend apps
  • You’re a self-starter with strong ownership, initiative, and the ability to quickly learn and navigate complex systems
  • You’re open-minded and communicate with clarity, directness, and respect
  • You value humility, are low-ego, and thrive in a collaborative, transparent culture
  • You have excellent English skills and you are based in a European time zone.
  • You are curious and eager to experiment with new and better ways of developing software, whether it’s a new framework, the latest AI tool, or developing a new practice
  • A degree in Computer Science (or a related field) or equivalent work experience is desired as it provides a strong foundation for tackling the complex challenges we work on.
  • Bonus: you’re comfortable operating beyond your own squad - reviewing designs and guiding other engineers whose work touches the mobile app. This role has room to grow into a broader technical leadership scope for the right person.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Design, build, and maintain our core APIs and backend services that power the mobile app and marketplace
  • Own the operations and the monitoring of production systems
  • Be the mobile-aware voice in backend decisions across squads: review designs and API changes, yours and other teams’, to make sure they fit the needs and constraints of our mobile app, and flag caveats early
  • Integrate third-party systems and APIs into our platform
  • Own design and implementation of new features and services
  • Identify best practices and create/suggest standards to be used by whole engineering department
  • Documents and demonstrates solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments and clear code
  • Contribute to sustaining refurbed engineering culture by mentoring more junior colleagues and onboarding new joiners
  • Collaborate closely with other engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions
  • Proactively offer insights and presents achievements and results in relevant meetings
  • Occasionally propagate your backend changes to frontend

WHY YOU WILL ENJOY WORKING WITH US:

Our Culture and Values:

  • Decisions should be made based on facts and not by hierarchy levels? We sure think so!
  • We embrace giving and receiving feedback, testing and welcoming new ideas, as well as sharing our knowledge across the company.
  • You fail sometimes? Well, so do we! We’re all just human, let’s learn from our mistakes to improve in the future!
  • No matter who you love, where you’re from, who you pray to, whether you pee sitting down or standing up – we are a bunch of talented people who enjoy spending our time making a difference!

Personal & Professional Development:

  • You’ll have access to a dedicated learning budget within your department to support your growth, whether it’s courses, conferences, or other learning opportunities that matter to you.
  • We partner with Likeminded, offering you private sessions with experts for your personal growth and mental health.
  • We frequently host internal workshops, allowing our teams to further develop their skills in different areas and enhancing collaboration across departments.

Flexibility:

  • We care about a healthy work/life balance. We not only function and support a fully remote setting but also offer the possibility to work from our beautiful office in the vibrant heart of Vienna – we love dogs, so feel free to bring your furry little buddy too 😊
  • We trust you to do the best job, so we don’t care so much when you do it – you are able to self-organize.
  • You will also be invited to take part in our office weeks, happening three times a year, where you will have the chance to work side by side with your colleagues and enjoy the team-building events and on-site workshops

…and much more! See https://careers.refurbed.com/ for further insights!

  • Comfort with designing systems from scratch and owning the product development process end-to-end
  • Strong written communication skills and experience working in a remote, async-first team that’s spread across time zones

The annual US salary range for this role is $160,000 to $200,000 plus equity. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Lithic and will be narrowed during the interview process based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

Engineer Senior Software Engineer (Product) at ActiveProspect

Senior product engineer who owns end-to-end outcomes across full-stack development (React, Node.js, Python on AWS) while staying close to customers and shipping rapidly.

Senior Posted about 9 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Senior Product Engineer

Company Overview

ActiveProspect is on a mission to make consent-based marketing the best channel for online customer acquisition. We provide marketers the products they need to acquire qualified customers at scale. Our platform is trusted by thousands of companies engaged in direct-to-consumer marketing, helping them save wasted spend, comply with ever-changing regulations, and manage a constantly evolving partner landscape. Our flagship product, TrustedForm, is used to certify over 1 billion opt-in digital customer leads every year and is the gold standard for documenting prior express written consent for TCPA compliance.

Job Summary

You own customer and business outcomes, not tickets. You work like a forward-deployed engineer: your home base is a core team, and you deploy into projects, initiatives, and pods where the problem is, ship the outcome across the full stack (React on the frontend, Node.js and Python services on AWS), then carry what you learned back so the next team moves faster.. The technical bar is high, but coding ability is the floor here, not the ceiling. What sets this role apart is judgment: knowing the smallest thing worth shipping, when to kill your own idea, and when AI output is good enough versus when to override it.

You’ll move between your home team and the initiatives you deploy into, shipping early, talking to customers, and deciding fast.

Responsibilities

  • Own outcomes end-to-end, wherever you’re deployed. Frame the problem, design it, ship it, own the metric. Descope to the cheapest version that works. Prototype in days.
  • Stay close to customers. Shadow sales and support, join advisory conversations, and let customer reality drive technical decisions. Propose what to build, defer, and kill.
  • Own your domain and share it. Its interfaces, reliability, performance, and security, including on-call for the systems you own. Consent and PII handling are central to customer trust. Bring patterns, tooling, and hard-won context back to the wider org rather than hoarding them.
  • Build and scale both the product surface and the platform beneath it. Ship responsive, accessible React interfaces with a strong UI/UX eye, back them with Node.js and Python services and APIs, and keep the cloud batch platform and data pipelines that deliver multi-tenant products reliable as they scale.
  • Architect AI-driven leverage. Build AI-assisted workflows that hold up, evolve the team’s practices as tooling changes (Cursor, Claude Code, and whatever comes next), and look for product wins AI unlocks (smarter routing, anomaly detection, and more).
  • Multiply the teams you touch. Mentor on judgment and product sense, not just syntax. Write decision memos and ADRs. Enable Product and Design to self-serve.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A track record of shipping something end-to-end that you cared about and owning the outcome, not just the code.
  • Product judgment: pushing back on a bad spec, proposing the cheapest experiment, descoping well, and collaborating with Product to suggest solutions rather than waiting for a fully specced ticket.
  • Comfort embedding with unfamiliar teams and codebases, getting productive fast, and leaving them better than you found them.
  • Deep full-stack expertise: React (component lifecycle, state management, rendering optimization), JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern CSS on the frontend; Node.js and Python services, RESTful APIs, and asynchronous data handling on the backend.
  • Cloud and data-pipeline depth: AWS core services (Lambda, EC2, S3, DynamoDB, API Gateway) and cloud batch / workflow orchestration (Step Functions, Airflow, or similar) to deliver multi-tenant batch products and data solutions reliably at scale.
  • A strong UI/UX eye: you turn wireframes, mockups, and ambiguous requirements into intuitive, accessible, user-centric journeys.
  • Strong systems design judgment in ambiguous contexts, and a security mindset aligned with sensitive consumer data and compliance.
  • Fluency building your own AI-assisted workflows and reading AI output critically. Daily use of AI-native tools (Cursor, Claude Code) and precise prompting across OpenAI and Claude models, with the judgment to know when to trust output, how to review it for hidden bugs and security issues, and when to override it.
  • Clear written and verbal communication. Mentorship experience. 5-10% travel.

How It Works

You’ll report to an Engineering Manager who owns several teams and stays out of their daily flow. As you embed, you’ll often act as the player-coach Tech Lead, owning technical direction while the EM owns delivery health and stakeholder alignment across the group.

Success looks like movement in a user or business metric you/your team owns, high-value work deliberately not built, decisions made fast, and teams that move faster after you’ve worked with them, not just while you’re there.

Senior software engineer who designs, builds, and maintains open source cloud native products in Golang/TypeScript while engaging with community contributors and upstream ecosystems.

Senior Remote Posted about 9 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

Role Description:

Defense Unicorns seeks an experienced Software Engineer to help build, maintain, and steward our open source products and the broader ecosystems they depend on. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, designers, engineers, community contributors, and end users to ensure we’re building the right solutions—and building them well.

As an Open Source Software Engineer, you’ll operate at the intersection of community stewardship, product development, and technical execution. You’ll help lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of cloud native software that has direct impact on mission outcomes.

You bring strong Golang experience, a love for cloud native technologies and a willingness to learn TypeScript to support our broader OSS ecosystem. Over time, you may also contribute across additional languages and communities, including Rust, as our open source work evolves.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with internal engineers and open source community contributors on features, bug fixes, reviews, and releases through clear communication, collaboration, and responsible stewardship
  • Engage with open source communities, industry partners, and standards bodies via common platforms (e.g., Slack, GitHub, etc.) to help move our projects and their upstream ecosystems forward, including facilitating community meetings with our internal and external users
  • Amplify the voice of our projects within the ecosystem by delivering a mission-focused end-user experience and collaborating with users to produce case studies, blogs, or conference presentations
  • Proactively identify and resolve ambiguity across product requirements, community needs, and upstream project constraints
  • Comfortable working proactively, managing time efficiently, and thriving in a vibrant remote work environment  ✨🦄
  • Build and integrate secure, interoperable cloud native software for defense environments while contributing improvements back to relevant open source projects where appropriate
  • Own architecture decisions and ensure technical quality across open source codebases, APIs, and contributor workflows
  • Develop comprehensive documentation, including design proposals, contribution guides, user documentation, and maintenance guides
  • Stay abreast of emerging cloud native, open source, and secure software supply chain technologies to inform product enhancements and ecosystem contributions
  • Provide technical mentorship and elevate engineering standards across the team
  • Influence product direction through deep understanding of user needs and system constraints

Travel Expectations/Requirements: 5-15%

The listed responsibilities are not exhaustive and additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the evolving needs of the organization. We are seeking a dynamic individual who is able to adapt and take on new responsibilities as they arise.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience with software engineering
  • Experience building or maintaining open source software tools, especially in cloud native, software lifecycle, or software supply chain domains
  • Proficient in Go, with interest in learning TypeScript, and contributing across additional modern languages such as Rust
  • Strong understanding of system design, library and software APIs, Kubernetes, and cloud architecture (e.g., AWS, Azure)
  • Excited to assess intricate problems, propose solutions, and implement them effectively
  • Experience contributing to open source projects and participating in open source communities. Involvement with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), Apache Software Foundation (ASF), Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), or similar communities is a huge plus
  • Familiar with core Kubernetes concepts, including but not limited to controllers, operators, and CRDs
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, comfortable conveying technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

Full compensation packages are based on candidate experience. Compensation ranges are established using national benchmarking data and apply across all geographic locations within the United States.

Engineer Staff Platform Engineer - Infrastructure at Kalepa

Staff Platform Engineer designs, builds, and maintains infrastructure systems that support AI and production services at scale.

Salary range: $240k – $300k USD*

Location: New York, NY (Hybrid)

About the Role

The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on technical contributor embedded in our agile development organization, helping build and deliver our next-gen compliance platform. You bring the judgment and independence to take features from design through production-ready code, making sound technical decisions along the way and building software that fits cleanly into the team’s architecture.

You bring strong full-stack experience, anticipate future needs, mentor peers, and make decisions that minimize the cost of future change. You partner closely with your Product Manager and fellow engineers to turn product strategy into well-built, maintainable software.

What Your Ride Will Look Like

  • Write production-ready, well-tested, self-documenting code, and debug systematically across the areas you work in, using monitoring and observability data to guide stability and performance improvements.
  • Architect, write, and review reusable, testable, and efficient code following Clean Code / SOLID principles, and raise the bar on code quality, maintainability, and performance in the code you touch.
  • Understand your team’s architecture deeply, design new code to align with it, and apply a security lens to your own work and to peer reviews.
  • Design and implement low-latency, high-availability, performant applications across the full stack.
  • Contribute to front-end (Vue/Vuex) and back-end (.NET) development, helping establish and follow patterns and standards.
  • Own SQL query performance for the code you write and contribute to database design decisions.
  • Apply microservice and micro front-end architecture best practices.
  • Identify and pay down technical debt pragmatically, knowing when to refactor, when to rewrite, and when to leave well enough alone.
  • Share in DevOps responsibilities and champion observability tooling and practices.

Delivery & Ownership

  • Break your work into well-understood, properly prioritized pieces, and handle risk and ambiguity responsibly, including under pressure and shifting priorities.
  • Make realistic but ambitious commitments, deliver on them, and communicate blockers or cost overruns early, weighing cost and value in your own work and in your suggestions to others.
  • Help refine requirements and ensure you have the context to make good day-to-day decisions without constant escalation.
  • Participate in agile (Scrum/Kanban) ceremonies and help make them effective.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate with clarity to both technical and non-technical audiences, making the complex understandable and trade-offs explicit.
  • Give and seek feedback proactively, and foster documentation and knowledge-sharing, including in structured async and remote-first workflows.
  • Help teammates overcome blockers, build strong relationships across the organization, and mentor others with openness and empathy.
  • Foster a culture of respectful disagreement, accountability, and continuous improvement to your team’s practices.
  • Collaborate across multiple time zones, ensuring remote teammates are included, unblocked, and aligned.

Product Partnership & Business Acumen

  • Partner with your Product Manager and teammates to help scope and sequence your work, balancing customer needs against technical realities.
  • Surface engineering constraints, risks, and opportunities early on the work you’re involved in.
  • Advocate for investment in platform health, developer experience, and quality alongside feature work.
  • Understand your team’s domain, strategy, and business model, connect it to broader market trends and the organization’s engineering strategy, and contribute to design decisions.

What You Bring (Required)

  • Several years of professional full-stack software engineering experience, with a clear philosophy on how to improve a codebase over time.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with comfort in documentation, structured async workflows, technical writing, and remote-first practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of your work, deliver in fast-paced and ambiguous environments without loss of quality, and mentor peers.
  • Experience partnering with product management to deliver business outcomes.
  • Experience working across multiple time zones in a remote or hybrid environment.

Tech Stack

Front End

  • Development: Vue.js 2 or 3 / Vuetify / Vuex / Webpack
  • Testing: Jest / Vitest

Back End

  • Development: .NET Framework / .NET Core / .NET 7–8 / C#; REST API design and implementation
  • Data: MSSQL / SQL Profiler / Query Tuning
  • Testing: nUnit / Moq / AutoFixture

Engineer Edfinity: Senior Software Engineer, remote

Senior software engineer builds full-stack web applications using Rails and React, develops LLM-powered features, and optimizes performance for a higher-ed STEM courseware platform.

Senior Remote Posted about 15 hours ago We Work Remotely — Programming
What this role involves

Headquarters: Austin, TX
URL: https://edfinity.com

About Edfinity

Edfinity is the category leader in courseware and assessment technology for higher-ed STEM. We're NSF-supported, bootstrapped, and built by a close-knit remote team of senior engineers. We're growing fast and leading the field in AI-powered courseware that moves the needle on educator productivity and student outcomes. Your work will reach hundreds of institutions, and you will help decide how it gets built.

How we work

  • We're fully remote, with team members distributed across the US, and with that comes personal flexibility and accountability.
  • AI agents produce most of our code. We move fast, but we temper velocity with quality and stability above all else.
  • Engineers frame the problems, direct the work, and are accountable for everything that ships. If you already work this way and have opinions about it, you'll feel at home.
  • Everyone has opportunities to work across different areas of the platform, and team members are expected to develop deep technical expertise over time. This is particularly important as we step away from hands-on coding.
  • We're a small team of collaborative senior engineers. Your opinion matters.
  • The pace of change is real. More than ever, we're continually evolving our tooling and workflows as LLMs become more capable.

What you’ll be doing

Our stack is Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, Elasticearch, ClickHouse, Redis/Sidekiq, and React.

  • Full-stack product development in areas like assessment authoring, delivery, and grading; educator and student-facing features; LMS integrations
  • LLM-powered features, from prompt architecture to auto-grading to eval infrastructure
  • Performance optimization and reliability refactoring to handle both day-to-day load and high-stakes spikes
  • Stewardship of a mature codebase: upgrades, migrations, and paying down technical debt methodically
  • Part-time technical support rotation. Customer happiness is extremely important to us.

What you'll need

  • 8-15 years building and running scalable production web applications and services
  • Deep experience with Rails
  • Experience with web front-ends such as React
  • Recent experience in an SDLC revolving around the use of AI agents
  • Strong CS fundamentals in systems, data modeling, and complexity
  • Excellent communication hygiene, collaborative skills, and strong sense of self-direction.
  • Interest in a long-term seat on a close-knit team.
  • Authorization to work in the United States. We are not able to sponsor or transfer work visas at this time.

Compensation

$135,000-$195,000, plus eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus, retirement plan, and PTO

Engineer Samsara: Staff Software Engineer

Staff-level software engineer building AI-powered IoT and fleet management products at scale, owning zero-to-one problem spaces end-to-end.

Senior Remote Posted 1 day ago We Work Remotely — Programming
What this role involves

Headquarters: Remote
URL: https://www.samsara.com/

About the role:

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) sits at the center of hardware, software, AI, and the physical world. The platform processes 25+ trillion data points annually from IoT sensors, cameras, and connected devices across thousands of organizations, and that dataset is compounding: it grew from 4 trillion to 25+ trillion in four years. We're still early in turning that data into the products that will define how physical operations run, and we're hiring the engineers who will build what comes next.

We're approaching ~$2B ARR growing 30%+ year over year, with 96% of our largest customers on two or more products. The fastest-growing divisions at Samsara are tackling the hardest, most ambiguous problems at the company: building new products from scratch, applying AI and ML to massive real-world datasets, and shipping capabilities that change how organizations maintain equipment, manage fleets, and run day-to-day operations. Most of this work is zero-to-one, at billion-dollar scale.

We're looking for software engineers who want to define what ships next. Leveling is broad and flexible: we're hiring from Senior through Staff+, across platform and product, and we're open to shaping scope around the right person's strengths and interests. That window won't stay open long.

This role is remote and open to candidates residing in the US. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role.

You should apply if:

  • You want to impact the industries that run our world. The software you build will have real-world stakes: helping keep the lights on, getting food into grocery stores, keeping workers safe. What ships here isn't metrics on a dashboard. It shows up on the loading dock, the job site, and the dispatch floor.
  • You want to build, not maintain. Samsara is in full growth mode. We're building new systems from scratch, not babysitting old ones. You'd own entire problem spaces end to end, with the autonomy to set direction from day one.
  • You want to work where AI meets the physical world. Samsara has spent a decade building the largest proprietary dataset for physical operations. More connected assets generate more data, more data trains better models, better models drive more value, and more value wins more assets. The market and the opportunity here are what set us apart, not just the models.
  • You believe customers are more than a number. Samsara engineers have a rare closeness to end users. You'll participate in customer interviews, collaborate with product managers and customer success, and use that context to build products that solve real problems operators face every day.
  • You have the curiosity and drive to figure it out. We're looking for people who take pride in their work and get things done at all costs. The engineers who thrive here don't wait to be told what to build. They define it, ship it, and own the outcome. The rate-limiting step on our teams isn't tooling or process. It's ambition.

In this role, you will:

  • Take ownership of technically complex, mission-critical areas and run with them. We want to point you in a direction and show up to the demo meeting impressed, not spend our weeks managing the details.
  • Define and drive technical strategy for new products and platform capabilities, from backend services and APIs to the customer-facing UI.
  • Design and ship full-stack features end to end. You'll work across backend, frontend, and potentially mobile to deliver AI-powered products that solve real operational problems.
  • Partner with product, design, and customer-facing teams to translate ambiguous, real-world problems into clear technical plans and measurable outcomes.
  • Build and scale the systems behind AI-driven products, including data ingestion, APIs, and the workflows that put intelligence into the hands of operators.
  • Raise the bar for the engineers around you through code reviews, design reviews, technical mentorship, and by setting a standard for quality, velocity, and craft.
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in software design and development, including building and operating production systems at scale.
  • Strong full-stack fundamentals. You're comfortable working across backend services, APIs, and frontend (web or mobile) to ship complete products.
  • Proficiency in modern languages and frameworks (Go, Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, React, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-team or cross-org projects from inception through rollout, including managing ambiguity, driving alignment, and delivering measurable impact.
  • Experience building AI-powered or data-driven products. You don't need to train models, but you know how to take AI capabilities and turn them into products customers love.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A track record of building: zero-to-one products, systems you left in a meaningfully better place, or hard problems you refused to let stay unsolved.

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Experience shipping AI-powered features in production, whether that's LLM-based products, agentic workflows, recommendation systems, or other customer-facing AI.
  • Comfort with modern AI-augmented development workflows (Cursor, LLMs, etc.) to multiply your output and accelerate delivery.
  • Background working with real-world operational data (telematics, sensor data, work orders, inspections) or a strong interest in learning the domain.
  • A proven track record of mentoring senior engineers and influencing engineering culture, standards, and best practices beyond a single team.
  • Side projects, open-source contributions, or other signals of curiosity and drive outside the scope of your day job.

About the Role

You'll build the agentic systems and data pipelines behind NetworkOS's AI capabilities: production agent workflows built on industry-leading agent SDKs and harnesses, MCP servers, and Agent Skills standards; the eval and observability layer that keeps LLM quality measurable; and the ingestion pipelines that turn messy, diverse data sources into queryable knowledge.

This is an execution seat, not an ivory tower. You'll commit code every week, ship agents as product capability rather than demos, and help shape a roadmap that's heading deep into graph + agents territory — for customers in defense, public sector, and regulated enterprise.

Agents in production. Pipelines that hold. Evals that keep everyone honest.

What You'll Do

  • Ship production agent systems — design, build, and operate agentic workflows (agent SDKs, MCP servers, Agent Skills standards) powering AI-driven matching, analysis, and data intelligence

  • Operationalize LLM quality — build the eval and observability layer with Langfuse, golden datasets, LLM-as-judge patterns, and FinOps-style tracking so every workflow has measurable quality, cost, and latency

  • Engineer data pipelines — robust ingestion of documents, structured data, and external sources into searchable knowledge bases with quality validation, deduplication, and incremental updates

  • Own retrieval quality — hybrid search combining vector, keyword, and metadata retrieval, continuously improved through reranking, query expansion, and contextual compression

  • Accelerate with AI — build custom MCP tools and Agent Skills that make the whole engineering team measurably faster

  • Execute alongside the team — pair with full-stack engineers on AI integration points, contribute to incident response for AI services, and keep your hands in the code

Our Tech Stack

  • Languages: Python (primary); Kotlin (core platform language at CAI); TypeScript/Node.js and other modern languages (secondary)

  • AI/ML: FastAPI, Pydantic; multi-provider LLM SDKs (Anthropic, OpenAI, and others)

  • Agentic Tooling: Claude Code/Codex/etc.; industry-leading agent SDKs and harnesses; MCP servers; Agent Skills standards

  • LLM Operations: Langfuse + evals (golden datasets, LLM-as-judge); in-house FinOps tracking (token usage, latency, cost); multi-provider orchestration including AWS Bedrock

  • Search & Retrieval: Vector databases, OpenSearch, embedding models

  • Data: PostgreSQL, Amazon S3; streaming pipelines (Kafka/Kinesis) where needed

  • Infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes (AWS EKS); DataDog + OpenTelemetry observability

What We're Looking For

Must-Haves

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 3+ years focused on AI/ML or data engineering

  • Production agentic/LLM application experience — built and operated systems around LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI) serving real users: agents, tool-use, or orchestrated LLM workflows

  • Data engineering background — robust, scalable pipelines for AI/ML workloads

  • LLM operations experience — evals and observability for production LLM systems (quality, cost, latency)

  • Production retrieval experience — vector databases and/or search engines (OpenSearch, Elasticsearch)

  • Modern Python stack proficiency — FastAPI, Pydantic, async/await, modern dependency management

  • AI-native workflows — demonstrated ability to leverage Claude Code/Codex or similar agentic coding tools to accelerate development

  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS

  • US citizenship required (DoD contracting — IL4/IL5 environments — and FedRAMP compliance)

Nice-to-Haves

  • Deep agentic ecosystem experience — Agent Skills standards, custom MCP servers, agent SDKs across major vendors

  • Advanced RAG expertise — GraphRAG, agentic RAG, contextual retrieval, reranking strategies

  • Graph data experience — knowledge graphs, graph databases, or graph-based retrieval

  • Model selection & rightsizing — matching models to domain-specific use cases across quality, cost, and latency tradeoffs

  • Streaming data experience (Kafka, Kinesis) for real-time knowledge base updates

  • Research background, open-source contributions, or an advanced degree in ML/IR/NLP

Why Join Collaboration AI?

Real AI engineering, not a wrapper shop. Production agents, hybrid retrieval, continuous evals, and a roadmap heading into graph + agents — with the autonomy to shape how it's built.

AI-native by default. We build with AI, not just for AI. Agentic coding tools (Claude Code/Codex/etc.), agent SDKs and harnesses, MCP servers, and Agent Skills standards are how we work daily — you'll both use and build them.

Work that matters. Defense, public sector, and regulated industries — SOC 2 and NIST compliance, FedRAMP readiness, and customers whose missions demand AI they can trust.

Small, senior team. Early-stage impact with your work visible from week one. You'll help set the bar for how AI engineering is done here.
